This is the standard psychotic killer episode, which draws heavily from the SF Dirty Harry tradition. "Crosstalk" evens starts off with a Dirty Harry-type of random small crime (a store robbery) which Nash comes across while driving to work. There's nothing especially scary about this psychotic killer (unlike the demon-like Zodiac killer in the original DIRTY HARRY) and it's been updated with a techno-twist about life in the late 1990s with the ever present cellular phone.
Lest we get too bored by this re-tread villain, there's Joe's sex dreams involving Caitlin. Just when you can almost buy Yasmine Bleeth as a cop, she shows up in sexy clothes. We get to see her in lingerie in a gratuitous series of hilarious dream sequences. If you wonder why Yasmine is on NASH BRIDGES... Besides, Nash's private life is now so boring and monagamous, he's just got to share his women with everybody - with Joe in his dreams, and by extension, with us, the panting male audience. We can look, but Nash gets to touch her.
As for Fallen Cop Evan - in the MIAMI VICE past, cops were heroic while doing unheroic things (like pretending to be shady drug dealers). The NASH BRIDGES cops are like celebrities and rock stars - they self-destruct and fall prey to personal demons. Evan is in severe denial about his drinking problem - it's going to be interesting in how NASH BRIDGES deals with this given Don Johnson's publicly acknowledged drinking problems. Evan needs a savior as he continues to sink deeper and deeper in his own private hell hole.
