Nash abandons a cornered suspect in an alley after learning his daughter Cassidy has been shot at school. Student Brian van Pelt, while demonstrating a gun to a potential buyer, accidentally shoots Cassidy in the buttocks. To top off the chain of upsetting events, Nash and father Nick are forced out of Nash's apartment when the city decides to shore-up his earthquake damaged apartment.
Home from the hospital, Cassidy's new boyfriend Freddie visits much to the consternation of Nash. Lisa is still shaken by the shooting incident. The .45 automatic is traced to Brian van Pelt, who gives up a gun seller named Quick. Nash and Joe attempt to arrest Quick, but in a car chase, Quick is electrocuted to death. A pay stub in Quick's car leads to Timothy Gage, gun shop owner. Timothy has sold guns to both sides of rival gangs - first to Striker, leader of the West Street gang and then to Asian gangs. Brian van Pelt has offered to take the place of Quick and sell guns for Gage.
Gage, fearing that Brian might give him up, sends Striker to kill Brian. Nash and Joe intercede on the hit. Nash kills Striker and the two thugs. Brian gives up Gage, and Gage is arrested by Nash and Joe. After parading Gage before the West Street gang and implying that Gage has set them up, Gage gives Nash and Joe the location of his next ship of illegal guns.
Cassidy has been accepted to Berkeley for college, but has decided to delay college for one year to do environmental volunteer work. Nick has made a pile of money from Freddie's tips on horses. Nash watches as the .45 automatic that has been used to shoot Cassidy is destroyed along with Gage's shipment of guns.
