Mobster Patrick McCauly is killed by the McMillan clan, who control one third of San Francisco's prostitution and gambling. Nash and Joe are assigned to surveillance on Connor McMillan, one of the sons of the McMillan clan suspected of killing a police officer. The surveillance reveals Connor's romantic involvement with Kelly, Nash's second ex-wife. Connor must obtain a painting he gave to Kelly - the painting has a safe deposit key hidden in the back.
Horace Atwood, the McMillan clan's family lawyer, is killed by suspect Connor. Nash meets with Corick McMillan, the patriarch of the clan, because the father wants to know who killed his lawyer. Shortly afterwards, Corick is killed by his evil son Kevin. Nash obtains an audio tape from Connor's safety deposit box, but the tape has been water damaged. Connor reveals to Nash that the safety deposit box contains an audio tape of Kevin's confession that Kevin killed a police officer in 1989.
Meanwhile, the bar that Joe co-owns with Mrs. Nassiter, a gangster's widow, has 500 dollars missing from the cash register, and Joe must investigate.
Kelly reveals to Nash that she had a secret child by Connor, but that the child was put up for adoption in England. Nash goes to see Kevin to bluff Kevin that they have the tape. Connor confronts Kevin, and as Nash and Joe close in, Kevin is about to kill his brother. Kevin can't kill Connor, and instead kills himself in front of Nash, Joe and Connor.
Joe discovers that Blue Eye, a street thug, has been extorting protection money from his bar. Joe arrests the thug. Nash has found out that Connor knew about his secret daughter and had her returned to him. Nash brings them all together as a family, and Kelly agrees to stay with Connor and their daughter Megan.
